Gaia Alesco #1 & #2; created for the Face to Figure group exhibition held at The Studio, Kalk Bay, South Africa, 13th-26th November 2014. Part of an ongoing series...;
Gaia is the personification of the Earth, is the great mother of all: creator of the Earth and all the Universe; the heavenly gods, the Titans, and the Giants were born to her. Mother Nature (or Mother Earth) is a common personification of nature that focuses on the life-giving and nurturing aspects of nature by embodying it in the form of the mother.
Gaia philosophy, holds that all organisms on a life-giving planet regulate the biosphere to the benefit of the whole. The concept draws a connection between the survivability of a species within the whole, the impact of humanity upon the biosphere and maintains that globalization may not be sustainable, aiming to promote ecologically sustainable development.
To this extent, the very nature of any mother is to nurture and protect her children, the next generation and what they stand to inherit. To the greater extent, mans need for instant gratification seems a contradiction to the very essence of his own birth right. As a mother would her child, as is the nature of the earth itself, we live in hope that society as a whole, the human race itself, through the creation and exploration of ideas and actions, moves humanity toward a more harmonious relationship within Gaia, on Earth.
